Agreements were signed on 28 May 2025 with Power Plants of North Macedonia (JSC ESM) and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) to complete the final phase of Bogdanci Wind Park, representing a significant investment in renewable energy infrastructure in North Macedonia. The project underscores the country's commitment to diversifying its energy sources, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and promoting sustainable development.

This second phase involves the construction of four wind turbines, each with a capacity of 3.4 MW. This expansion will significantly reduce reliance on electricity imports and strengthen the stability of country’s energy system. This investment will increase the installed capacity of the wind park by up to 15MW, which is expected to produce an additional 46 GWh of electricity annually, equivalent to the energy demand of around 6,000 households. In total, over 22,000 households will be supplied with more reliable and sustainable electricity.

The project benefits from a €9 million contribution from the EU’s Western Balkans Investment Framework and a loan from German development bank KfW.

Lazo Uzuncev, General Manager of JSC ESM outlined: "Preparatory field activities and the construction of the necessary infrastructure for the reception, installation, and connection of the wind turbines to the power grid will begin this summer. This process is expected to be completed within 13 months, after which the final phase of the wind turbine installation will begin, which is expected to be completed during the summer of 2027."

Steffen Hudolin, Head of the Cooperation section in the EU Delegation to North Macedonia: "The European Union, through its financial and institutional support, is turning today’s energy challenges into future breakthroughs in clean energy. The WBIF’s investment in Phase 2 of the Bogdanci wind park, with a grant of 9 million euros, is proof of a long-term commitment and partnership — both with KfW and with the Government — supporting North Macedonia in accelerating its green energy transition. This is a model of successful partnership within the Green Deal framework, and the expansion represents a significant step on North Macedonia’s path toward energy decarbonisation and regional climate resilience."

Petra Drexler, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to North MacedoniaGermany, the EU, and North Macedonia are united for a sustainable and carbon-neutral energy future: the expansion of the Bogdanci wind park, in cooperation between the German development bank KfW, the EU WBIF, and ESM, is yet another illustration of our ongoing strong partnership. Wind energy stands out as one of the cleanest energy sources due to its zero-emission operation and exceptionally low carbon footprint throughout its entire life cycle.

Sanja Bozinovska, Minister of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources: This project stands as a powerful symbol of what we can achieve through strategic partnership, trust and shared vision for a greener, more resilient future. It reinforces our national commitment to accelerating the energy transition, boosting renewable energy capacity, and strengthening energy independence for our country.

Pablo Obrador, Head of the Energy Sector Unit for Southeast Europe at KfW"Wind energy is irreplaceable in the modern energy mix. It offers a path toward cleaner air, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, energy independence, economic growth, and long-term sustainability. Since 2014, the Bogdanci wind park has become an example that wind energy can play a very important role in the efforts toward a green transition and carbon neutrality."
